RE: cleaning mineral deposits from tank/ lighting

Thanks for the tips. I tried all the regular methods - razor, vinegar, CLR. nothing seems to work. I can live with it - its only on the back panel of this used tank i got, but i was hoping to flip the tank around because the front is a little scratched.

I've got my filtration figured out (Fluval 304) and most other decisions. I'm still deciding on lighting. Anyone here have experience with compact fluorescents? I want this to be a planted freshwater tank, and I'm 99% sure I'll populate it with various species of new guinea rainbowfish. I'm thinking of building my own hood around a kit from AH supply, using two 55 watt CFs. If the CFs are really 2-3.5 times as efficient watt for watt as standard fluorescents, and I'm throwing 110 watts at a 55 gallon tank, does that sound like enough light?

Hello Eric, I have heard that soaking the glass down with vinagar and then scraping with several new razor blades works.  I guess the idea is not to let the blade get dull or you will scratch the glass.  L.R.C. cleaner will work but it is toxic.  You would have to keep it off the sealant.  AND RINCE VERY WELL.  Without knowing what you have tried already it's hard to suggest ideas.  If this does not work let me know.  And I will think about it some more.  Sometimes the glass is just too bad to come clean.  Good Luck,       Sandy

Hi. I'm about to set up an empty 55 gal tank my brother gave me. It has some
serious mineral/calcium deposits on it. nothing seems to be working. Any
miracle cures out there?
