Ah! But that's where the highly nerdy 1.5 foot long stainless steel UW medical kit comes in! With tweezers and scissors that reach from the gravel to the top of the tank I can prune to my heart's content!
 
As is typical in this hobby, your mileage may vary - the fish keeping (and especially plant keeping) folks have a serious lack of hard evidence about many products and claims. Personal preference is all we have to go on.
 
Well, that and the awesome GSAS library!
