Help! Is there a geologist in the house!? :)
I'm calling around to garden stores, trying to communicate exactly what sort
of rocks I'm looking for to decorate my aquarium, and it'd sure be helpful
if I knew the *proper name* of the particular kind of rock I want!
What I'm looking for is the sort of rock that's so ubiquitous in the Pacific
Northwest that to a layperson (like myself) it's basically synonymous with
"rock." In particular, I'm looking for the gray, round/oval,
water-smoothed, golfball to softball-sized rocks you'd find in any of a
number of rivers, lakes, and beaches in the general Seattle area. For
example, the sort I used to collect from the non-sandy parts of Alki beach.
Anyone know the proper name for this sort of rock? Granite? Basalt?
Gneiss? Schist? I'm looking at pictures of rocks on websites, but none of
them look exactly right...
Thanks!
