Re: need plant advice

Tapwater hardness is around 2... that would explain it :) I add crushed coral to most of my tanks and still have a hardness at 3-4 usually. Will add more, and calcium and mineral supplement, and see what happens with the most affected tank. If it works I will try to bring the hardness up in more tanks.
Thanks,
Kate

Could be a calcium deficiency. I had that happen with some of my plants
a few years ago when I had forgotten to supplement Ca and Mg. I don't know if Olympia's water is like Seattle's, but that might be a cause.

Hi,
I have a recurring problem with my java ferns. The leaves turn pale and finally white periodically. I am using flourish 2X a week, and it seems to happen periodically. The flourish bottle is not very specific about dosing, and maybe I am underdoing it? Using 1 ml in a 26 gallon and in a 45, and about half a mil in the 10 gallon tanks. Some have CO2, others don't, some have compact flourescent, others standard flourescent. I have tested the water and these tanks have no measurable amount of ammonia or nitrate (which is better than I can say for the water straight out of the tap). I am not seeing loss of color of non java ferns, and the fact that they sometimes recover makes me think they are not burned by the lights, but maybe this is the case? Anyone else seen this?
Thanks,
Kate
