At the big plant auction there was one company that donated a ton of
nice plants to us, can someone tell me the name of them? I am going to
recommend them to a new LFS here in Oly that is opening soon, and tell
them to tell the company they were referred by GSAS so they send even
more nice plants next year. I want the plant donator to feel
appreciated. :) Also I am going to set up a .com (I know, I know, bad
idea but it's going to be SMALL) to sell fish books, plants, killie
eggs, and anything else I feel ok about mailing. I will be getting the
Aqualog books, and am not too impressed with a lot of the other books
out there. Does anyone know of a particular publisher they are really
into? I know about TFH and Aqualog, but would like to carry some less
well known specialist and high quality books as well. Gotta support the
little guys, and Amazon.com has the TFH line covered. Any recommendations?
The new LFS is called Extreme Marine, it is at 2724 Pacific Ave SE
Olympia WA (360) 956-7009. They are not officially open but they showed
it to me yesterday, it's about halfway there. They will specialize in
well cared for and quarantined marine fish (some big chain stores don't
quarantine, they just dose heavily with meds and hope for the best) and
inverts and are going to sell entire setups with all the gear, they will
come with installation and 2 months free maintenance while the guys
teach the new owner how to care for them, and will offer financing. One
reef tank I saw was a 55 with everything, going for $1700.00 (I think).
To me this is a great deal, and the monthly payment thing allows people
to change their minds and return it if they find they cannot handle it.
Just figuring out which marine critters are compatible is a pain, and
then there is all the pricey equipment... I wanted to do this with
aquascaped community tanks and actually contemplated the exact space
they rented as my store but didn't think there was a market, hope they
can manage it. Might try to twist their arms into hiring me to do this
since they took my exact idea only with marine :) They will also have a
demo koi pond or two and nice garden with a creek-they have an acre to
add ponds to later.Hope the creek doesn't flood, it has the Olympic
Mudminnow in it and I think Koi would love to snack on them.
It's about a mile off exit 107 from I-5, will be on the right and is
easy to miss due to a section of woods and the curve of the hill it's
on, and it's in an old house instead of a storefront. If you are on the
road southbound give them a call to see if they are open, it's worth a
visit. The freshwater room isn't even built yet but will hopefully
feature my killifish :) and if I can talk them into it tons of plants.
The saltwater tanks are going to be really fun. It's like a whole store
full of display tanks.
