Be extremely careful when cutting polycarbonite or plexi on a tablesaw.....it
can shatter. When it shatters, small sharp objects can fly and high enough
velocities to penetrate skin.....yeah, that gets ugly in a hurry. Soooo, at a
minimum, when cutting these substances please wear safety glasses.....your
eyesight just is not worth saving a couple bucks on a pair of safety glasses.

I like polycarbonite (Lexan) better than using glass, and you can cut it with a
table saw.

Er, Drs F&S, not Big Al's.... Oops.
Thanks for the tip, Erik. I didn't know the hardware store would cut glass
for me. I'm all for saving money and I like do-it-yourself projects so I
think I'll look into that. We already have the Dremel and even the
attachment I'd need I think. $31.99 for the 48" top seems rediculous to me.
I actually like the marble handle idea though :) It seems more creative
than plastic to me!

Kind of not the direct answer, but I have been building my own glass tops
for several years. I get the glass from Home Depot or Lowe's,
double-strength, they cut to the right sizes, and I grind down the edges
with either an abrasive emery cloth (looks kind of like sandpaper but it's
more durable) or a dremel tool stone grinding tip. Getting the edges dulled
is the most important thing because it's quite a hazard otherwise.
I'd been siliconing the front and back together like they do on some brands
instead of hinging, and using marbles as handles for years, but just found
in Foster & Smith that they sell the handles and hinge material in four-foot
segments! So I just cut it to size now. And it gets boss' approval (wheras
the old marble handle did not).
On the other question, we don't get any special deals from the sponsors,
just the auction donations. Participating stores offer members general
merch discounts though (see website for current list of stores). I would
assume replacement lids would be covered under the 5-20% discount.
