cheapo metal halides

Hi,
Has anyone ever experimented with the industrial grade metal halides 
sold at Lowes or Home Despot? I have toyed with the idea of using them 
with T-5 actinics for balance, and a friend actually bought a bunch... 
she might return them though. So much cheaper than the ones sold for us 
hobbyists but I bet the temp is down in the 3200 K region.
If anyone has used them, what results did they get? Algae? Growth? 
Enquiring minds want to know :)
