Re: cheapo metal halides

Well, what my friend bought was under $20 so she is quite interested in hearing if it will work. She doesn't have $150 for lighting. They got a 180 liter tank with stand for $15 at a garage sale and thought they would be able to get bargains on all the other equipment... The tank is often the cheapest piece of equipment we buy. If the industrial bulbs did work she would be really really happy. :)

Hi Kate:

I got my light and bulb for $150 delivered. It's a 5500 K. I haven't set it up
yet. You can get bulbs cheap on eBay.

Hi,
Has anyone ever experimented with the industrial grade metal halides sold at Lowes or Home Despot? I have toyed with the idea of using them with T-5 actinics for balance, and a friend actually bought a bunch... she might return them though. So much cheaper than the ones sold for us hobbyists but I bet the temp is down in the 3200 K region. If anyone has used them, what results did they get? Algae? Growth? Enquiring minds want to know :)
Thanks,
Kate
