need help keeping big fish during big move
Hello All,
I just joined last month -- I am moving to Seattle around early
September. from NH.
I am planning on keeping my electric catfish Sparky. Two of us will be
driving across the country when it's hot out, with my geriatric
cat-mammal. Keeping the 10.5" long (standard length) monster in a
5-gal bucket at a tolerable temperature and good water quality as well
would be a bit much. Especially since we do not have an apartment
lined up yet, and would be staying with friends or family for the first
few days.
Is there anyone on the list who would be willing and able to keep a
large fish, unsuitable to a community tank, for at least 10 days and at
most a month?
She is in a 65-gal tank right now, but would most likely be fine in a
Rubbermaid tote or a somewhat smaller tank for such a short time.
She does discharge her electric organ when she feels threatened (say,
when stupid owners touch her back "to see what happens"). But she
isn't especially aggressive, and lets me pet her snout without fear or
self-defense. Especially when I'm feeding her.
(BTW, the bigger the tank, the smaller the shock you feel.)
I would ship things like food in the Fed-Ex box with her, along with
whichever accessories like whisper-filters or water treatments you
wanted, and of course re-imburse you for anything else she needed that
I don't send.
And getting her out of your tank and back in mine is very high on my
priority list once I arrive -- directly after renting an apartment.
Thanks, and looking forward to the meetings in the fall,
Steff
