I was trying to do just that a year or two ago.  Most
people just can't get their heads around the idea that
you can have very soft water with high pH. Our water
is not rational ;-P

I think the water here is naturally really quite acid,
but the water companies raise the pH to keep the old
pipes from leaching lead into the drinking water.
