 Thank you, I use water conditioner so the metals issue would have come up 
sooner, I still think it might be some sort of bacteria problem. the funny 
thing is that he/she does it infrequently. I don't know. Thank you for the 
ideas, I am planning an Asian theme tank with sand as the substrate heavily 
planted with Val. I might get some from you if I still need more.
