I agree it would be best not to add fish to that tank.
Is it possible that you are having poblems with low O2 overnight? You did
mention that fish show up dead in the morning and that some were hanging out
at the top a lot.
You might still have some Ich, or Velvet, or both running around. Velvet in
the gills, plus low O2 can be pretty rough.
It might be best to get the remaining fish out of the tank (since you are low
on fish) and then replace them after the tank has settled down. Without fish
any parasitesin the planted tank will die off, then you can add fish that you
think are healthy.
