Re: [GSAS-Member] up-date : crawdad died

I guess I should take responsibility for this entire iodine crustacean rumor thing getting out of hand. I read on the internet somewhere (AZ Aquatic Gardens) that you* need *to use iodine with shrimp a few years back, so I started doing it. Advertisement for selling iodine is what it probably was, they have taken the NEED part out of their site and just mention the iodine now. Since then I have bred several generations of common feeder shrimp so assumed adding the iodine was relevant, since this isn't often done. Ad for iodine for shrimp mentions reproduction and hatch rate being improved. That said, since starting this thread on the GSAS list I have found Amano and Red Crystal Shrimp that have never been dosed with iodine reproducing and moulting. So.... am assuming the iodine thing is just another gimmick to sell yet another product you don't need.
Sorry.
On the plus side I have 3 species of baby shrimp in the fishroom now, lost the amanos though. I am also raising baby marine shrimp. Since I already have the iodine I am continuing to use it... Don't believe everything you read on websites, and maybe not everything you read on chat lists either especially if it was written after midnight. :)

Hi Trish:

I never said you added salt to your tank. I said I
added it to mine, and
what happened afterward to my Amano Shrimp was very
strange, being that not
only they died fast, but also looked as if they had
been cooked. I only
added it to the water because I had some yellow lab
babies in there, and I
normally use the stuff in the adult tank.

I didn't add salt or anything, until after the
crawdad
was killed by it's tank mate....only then Last night
after cleaning did I add the Cichlid
Vital....nothing
else other than declorinator.

Not sure where you had gotten the idea I had added
salt.

Trish

PS the one remaining is doing fine, hiding out in a
cave. I put a small amount of carrot in, so will
know
when he has come out to eat it.

Neither are the Seachem African cichlid salts and
buffer, not much, or
little sodium chloride, but stuff like Epsom
salts.
I got some straight
plain iodine used for saltwater tanks after that.
Use half of what is
recommended for saltwater.

This isn't salt. It has iodine, and other vitamins
it's for all cichlids. Since I had read that the
crawdads need iodine, I figured I could use this,
and
the vitamins shouldn't hurt it. We'll find
out.....

Well as I suspected the crawdad died....I just
cleaned
the tank, and took out what was left of the one,
for
the water was looking pretty cloudy. I also
added
some
Cichlid Vital. Not sure if it is needed, but
don't
think it can hurt either.

So we'll see how it goes now with this one. The
one
which died was the one which was had blue on it.
The
other is more of a redish brown. So am going to
start
feeding it some carrots to help with coloration.
Have
read that they enjoy this, and other vegetable
matter.....

I was amazed at how soft the shell was on the
one
which had died, so I see how vuneralable they
would
be
in the wild, while moulting.
I noticed of what shell was left, {the back and
tail}
for the other one had eaten most of the rest, am
thinking it had shed all it's shell, but then
the
other had attacked it, and then killed it. Then
in
turn munched away.....
So now I know for if we get another, I will have
to
have better hiding places for them. I do have 2
caves,
and also some river rock for them, but
obvisiouly
it
wasn't enough. Need to have caves, which they
can
actually retreat completely, into.
