Al: My first PC lamp was included in a 55W retrofit and was a 'smart lamp' 50/50. I had some beginners algae problems and such but the bulb did well overall. The red rainbows were especially intense. After 8 months I switched to a 10K lamp which has a nice crisp white appearance which I prefer and added a plant grow bulb. Where the 10K bulb 'shines' in my current iteration is in balancing the redder tones of my cheapy T8's (5400K?). If you are using a multi bulb system, switch out bulb colors until you get the effect you desire. Paul On Wed, 13 Oct 2004, Kate Breimayer wrote:
Hi,I tried actinics and it was pretty worthless. If you use actinic/10,000K combos some plants will survive but not grow, and the light will be very dim. Works great for shy fish that hide in bright light. Switched same tanks to proper plant lights (6500 and 6700K) and everything grew much better, fish look great. The colors of the fish under 10,000K are bright as long as intense light doesn't scare them, but the actinics part alone hardly work at all for visible illumination and don't grow plants. Maybe the red fish were a little redder but that was about it.Kate carrera206@comcast.net wrote:Has anyone tried using a combination of Actinic lights combined with White (5000K and/or 6700K) bulbs in a tropical/freshwater fish tank? I read on the net recently about some folks trying it in order to "bring out" the colors of the fish. I know this configuration will not work as well for growing plants, but I've always wondered if it would make the fish look brighter or more vibrant. Or has anyone used the 10000K bulbs and if so what was your experience on how the fish appeared? Thanks, Al
