Anita: Sounds like you have the basics down. There is a special bit that I believe has a different angle cut so it is less likely to 'grab' at the end. I have been lucky so far with standard bits though. Work on a flat surface like a piece of scrap wood. Place tape (painters works well) before you cut. Keeps the edges smoth and looks nice when you pull the tape off. Use a hole saw for large holes.
