Re: [GSAS-Member] Camallanus cotti

I bought discomed for this condition, it was expired as of May 2000 and I got it a week ago. Go figure. Tried it on some angels with obvious camallanus and they appear to have expelled the worms despite the expired meds being moist, discolored, stuck to the capsule and basically being in a condition that kind of pissed me off when I got home and opened it up. Guess it works so I am no longer pissed, just concerned and feeling stupid. After telling my customers to check the expiration dates on meds I went and didn't do it myself. In a small town this gets really important-stores here might have stuff on the shelf 10 years without selling it! And wholesalers have shipped flake food that was already expired a year ago-which the factory sent them only a couple weeks ago. Buyer beware! The problem with expired stuff is that even though the med might work some of the chemicals might have changed into a toxic form so it's still not the best stuff to use. Anyone know if Prazipro will work on camallanus or if there is a better product?

Thanks Matt. I notice that Big Al's and Dr's F & S don't sell Discomed, but
I have seen it at Denny's Pet World. Thanks for telling everyone about the
sale there in December. I got a great 3' compact fluorescent light for a
decent price. I also traded some Brichardi's there. No worry about parasites
there, since the African tanks are at my boyfriend's condo.
All the same though, I will probably go and get some Levamisole cattle
dewormer at The Grange in Issaquah, or if they have Flubenzadole, since the
Levamisole is supposed to not work at pH's about 6.6.
I used some Praziquantel, another anthelmic, mixed in with food, which the
fish ate. I guess it can take up to four to five months before a person even
knows their fish has worms. I'll just deworm all the fish, lol. You never
know.

I've successfully treated for this in the past with killies and chiclets. The over-the-counter product I've used is Aquarium Pharm. "Discomed". Mix it

with some yummy live foods - I've used blackworms (which sometimes are sold as "tubifex" out here). Put the worms in some water that has the discomed dissolved in it and feed 2x a day for two weeks. Within a day or two, the worms will appear to be gone but continue the treatment for the full two weeks. Fish treated this way generally recover and it's better to just feed medicine to food rather than dose the whole tank.

Also, last I looked Discomed and other Aq. pharm. products had expiration dates on them, somewhat unusual (obligate slam at the aq. products industry)

for stuff sold to fish hobbyists

Good luck - my cichliets bred fine after this as did the killies.

Help. My killifish has this totally gross worms hanging out of her butt. I
have Praziquantel, which I am mixing in with the food, since the do want to
eat, and put a copper-based medication in the water. Does anyone know where
I can find Levimisole Hydrochloride? I'm sure the other killies have it too.
God, I hope I don't have it, after starting the siphon a few times!!!
