Re: [GSAS-Member] Parasites

Yes. And no. Odds of winning the fish disease lottery are lower than getting SARS it would seem. Considering how many people keep TB infested fish and don't even know enough to be careful I think the low rate of infection indicates that it's not very dangerous. On the other hand I have lost a ton of weight and my fish have worms, and I start siphons with my mouth. Down to 112 pounds and falling. Suppose that could be the pneumonia. There are fish that can harm you too, like venomous spined fish and those that don't look like they have the teeth they have. Marine tanks are even worse, there are all kinds of nasty toxic things in reef tanks. I think it's good to avoid putting cut hands in tank water, there are gloves made for this that go up to your armpits made of cheap plastic bag type material. Protect open wounds in general, especially deep wounds. Discus and angels supposedly are good sources of parasites, they can carry them a while without showing symptoms whether wild caught or domestic.

I have kept aquariums most of my life, and this raises a question I have often wondered about. Are there common aquarium diseases/parasites that are a threat to aquarists? Not only the occasional slurp of water from the siphon, but how about hands with cuts, etc...

I assume wild-caught would be a greater risk if there are aquatic parasites that also infect humans?

Help. My killifish has this totally gross worms hanging out of her butt. I
have Praziquantel, which I am mixing in with the food, since the do want to
eat, and put a copper-based medication in the water. Does anyone know where
I can find Levimisole Hydrochloride? I'm sure the other killies have it too.
God, I hope I don't have it, after starting the siphon a few times!!!
