John: I would also recomend plastic covers as they are lighter and don't shatter (glass cracks, tempered shatters right?) but beware that they do bow especially with lots of light/time. You can solve this by flipping them or cementing cross bars for support.
I would get a Plexiglass or Polycarbonate cover instead. Go to your local Plexiglass or plastic dealer with the measurements. One of the sections of the glass cover on my 72 gallon tank broke. It appears that a large Leporinus jumped and hit it just right. For the sake of the fish, I think tempered glass is the best option. It was a clean break. Is repairing a temporary option, and if so, I would appreciate learning how it is best done.
