Re: [GSAS-Member] BAP/HAP

Actually, the real value of BAP and HAP programs is that they encourage breeding, trading and publicising results in a known location (i.e., at the meetings or in the newsletter). Not quite so impactful these days as everyone's only a click away, but on the other hand, how else would we have known Paul's now the Diversifolia King?

For some clubs, like Portland, the BAP provides income for the club, as all fry to be considered for BAP "points" are given to the club for auction at each meeting. And those fish auctioned off then go to others in the club to try & spawn.

The other bit that was important in easlier BAP/HAP incarnations was not just mass of material, or number of species, but also breadth... has anyone out there reproduced an aquatic plant from flower? I haven't. But I think it's required to attain grand-master-horticulturist status.

In our club, there has in the last decade been a bit of a curse associated with the BAP chair, though. Seems that everytime someone decides to take on the job, the following month they rewrite the rules, and two months later they are never heard from again.

Look under 'contests' on the gsas.org website as they are both award programs that are dormant.

I am looking forward to the day I can have a framed piece of paper stating that I can indeed grow plants. Maybe even a gold seal so I know that I am truely importaint.

Growing old is inevitable; growing up is optional.

Too bad GSAS doesn't have a BaP, then everyone would want Endler's livebearers
 and other easy fish :-)

Or a HAP. I bought a bunch of Eichhornia diversifolia at the auction that I clocked at over an inch a day...
