Re: [GSAS-Member] Free fish food, or trade

Regarding food for auto feeders, the problem you'll face is moisture. Most flake foods get too gummy to work well. I did 'o.k.' with 'tetra bits' which are just little tiny chunks of tetramin reprocessed with some beta carotene (probably paprika) to make them red. They seemed to resist getting gummy. They float and sink slowly. Discus really like it..

As far as the auto feeders go, the only I had any success with was the one from rena that was electrically powered. None of the battery-based ones held up. I used it to feed Lamprichthys tanganicanus, a very active high-metabolism fish that did not like going hungry. The rena was pretty reliable.

Garden worms are fine for fish, just rinse them off. The only disease to worry about is your fish getting too fat from a diet of worms. They are a great live food for conditioning fish to breed, especially new world cichlids.
