I'm shocked as well! I took a class in Phycology (the study of algae) at the UW about ten years ago and was taught that algae occurred in SEVERAL DIFFERENT KINGDOMS. I'm kind of sorry to see that they've all been lumped into Protista now. Except for the BlueGreen algae (Cyanobacteria)- those are in a different domain with the bacteria still. Some people want to stop calling them algae but I think the name "algae" is a colloqial one now and not a scientific term anymore. All this changing of Kingdoms is a relatively new thing. And it is changing all the time. A few years back they were trying to make Cnidaria (anemones and jellyfish) into its own kingdom. Go figure. Algae is in the kingdom Protista...for those of you scratching > your heads. _______________________________________________ GSAS-Member mailing list GSAS-Member@thekrib.com http://lists.thekrib.com/mailman/listinfo/gsas-member
