Algae tablets don't usually have much algae in the first place. There is
Spirulina in some (which is a Cyanobacteria and hard to grow) and kelp in
others (which dies when it gets dry), but most of the ingredients are fish meal
and other non-algae. Check your labels.
So no, I don't think you can grow anything from algae discs or tablets except
fungus. But if you find kelp growing in your tanks I take it all back.

P.S. The idea of editting the comments down to a "digest" sounds pretty good.
