Please be careful here, it was not my intent to say that mopane trees are hacked down for the aquarium trade. I was simply pointing out that a "demand" will be filled when possible. So, if there is a demand for bogwood, it will be filled. If it comes from the mopane tree, it could be from trees that have fallen victim to other circumstances first. However, the bogwood could be coming from mopane trees that are harvested for other uses as well....such as lumber, firewood, to clear the ground for other agricultural uses, etc. But, when the demand for aquarium bogwood outstrips these mopane harvesting options, then, the trees will be harvested for bogwood purely. I am all in favor of more research being done on the subject if someone wishes to do so. I would also note that there is a long list of issues that deserve more research. How is the research to be prioritized? This would be another interesting discussion. -----Original Message----- From: Susan Welenofsky [mailto:welenofsky@comcast.net] Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 6:46 PM To: 'Greater Seattle Aquarium Society member chat' Subject: RE: [GSAS-Member] ecological consequences of using bogwood I think more research should be done on this topic. I'm not totally convinced that Africans go and hack down the mopane trees for the aquarium trade. Elephants tear them down too. Thanks to everyone who contributed articles. I also received this message from our president, Bob Holmes: "I'd like to second John's idea to publish Clay's bogwood article in the newsletter. Good stuff! Bob" I can't defy a direct order, so I put it in. Had to bump my OWN article (and Sandu's) to make room. Well, we'll get those next time. The research in answering questions such as yours is always educational and interesting to me. I will see if Steev would like to include this in the newsletter. > > Clay > _______________________________________________ GSAS-Member mailing list GSAS-Member@thekrib.com http://lists.thekrib.com/mailman/listinfo/gsas-member _______________________________________________ GSAS-Member mailing list GSAS-Member@thekrib.com http://lists.thekrib.com/mailman/listinfo/gsas-member _______________________________________________ GSAS-Member mailing list GSAS-Member@thekrib.com http://lists.thekrib.com/mailman/listinfo/gsas-member
