RE: [GSAS-Member] Malaysian Trumpet Snails (MTS)

I have Bacopa and some kind of red plant from Paul that is growing great,
even though there are a lot of burrowing MTS. I've never really seen them
eating the leaves of anything healthy.

It's a matter of what you want your tanks for. If you're interested in
breeding fish, those malaysian snails are a disaster - they eat fish eggs
big time. Further, in my experience, it's basically impossible to rid
yourselves of them once they've established themselves, which doesn't take
too long. I'm not so sure they don't eat plants - I never had any success
with the 'soft leaved' plants like bacopa and any red plants when I had
trumpet snails. Perhaps anubias and echinodorus do o.k. as they're too
chewy, I don't know.

I've gotten infestations by moving (what I though) was dried out driftwood
from one tank to another. They're really annoying creatures

Ramshorns snails are my favorite, they're not as prolific as the trumpet
snails and relatively easy to control plus are useful in fry tanks. If you
feed them lots of beta carotene, you can turn the ramshorns bright red, too.
