Re: [GSAS-Member] Room temperature tank
That will be a great meeting if it happens.
Thank you each of you, for all the good recommendations.
I'm going to start by lowering the temperature slowly in all of my
tanks, down to about 75-77
degrees, putting insulation on the backs and maybe on part of the
covers, reducing lighting
time and intensity to non-planted tanks, and possibly trying to replace
some of the filters with power
heads in the tanks, to salvage the heat from those pumps. I've always
liked the idea of moving
power away from the inside of the tank, since these appliances produce
quite a bit of
electromagnetic radiation - especially pumps and fluorescent ballasts.
Actually, I think I'll put the heat-
producing components UNDER the tank, and cover the open area behind the
tanks. That way, the rising
warm air will remain in the cabinet, and thus heat the bottoms of the
tanks.

This thread is making me hope the NANFA guy comes to a GSAS meeting
soon :) I'd love to have a little Missouri Bluegill to claim for a
tank.

Whoops!!!!!! My mistake. The Pumkin Seed is a Yellow
Perch.
The Sun Perch is also know as Brim,Perch,Sun Perch,
Bream, and Sun Fish.
The Perch I am talking about are small and
round....with spiny dorsal fins, and have lots of
yellow on their belly's, and almost rainbow dots on
their sides....very pretty.
Maybe someday I'll be able to try and keep them. The
problem with this is talking Hubby into another
tank.....LoL. Which I don't think will happen any time
soon! He has a hard enough time with me keeping 6! But
I say, "Hey whats ONE more!"

Yes it is......they are so cute! And are fun to
watch.
I remember fishing for them when I was kid with my
dad.....they would practically jump into the boat!
Very pretty in the sunlite.

Is that the Pumpkinseed fish? It's legal to
collect
them with a fishing
permit! After they've been kept with exotics, they
have to be destroyed
though, rather than released back out into the
wild.

I have always wanted to keep sun perch.....they
are
easy to catch, with a little food tempting them
they
practicaly jump into your boat! But from what I
have
read they are extreamly dirty. And besides not
even
sure if it would be legal in this stae to keep
them
in
aquariums.

If the room is 68F and you set the heater for
70F
the electrical use is
minimal if not negligable. Using powerhead type
pumps also dispenses the
waste heat into the tank.
Other candidates for 68-70 degrees (I'd like to
hear
more):
White Cloud Mountain Minnow
Danios
Weather Loach
Bloodfin Tetras
Corydoras
Glass Perch
Most Killifish
Most Gouramis, Paradise Fish
Some Barbs(?)
Most Plecostomus-types

I have an unheated tank here at work with
Endler's

the temp is pretty uniform...about 72. I have
co-workers who have kept
honey gouramis, neon tetras, Amano shrimp,
wild-type guppies and platies
in unheated tanks. The plants do fine as well,
but
we do mostly low-tech
non-C02 injected tanks and have mostly cheap
stem
plants, java moss and
java fern.
