RE: [GSAS-Member] Malaysian Trumpet Snails (MTS)

This is what I found in the Seattle Times. Looks like
it will be for about 1 month on the weekends.

Busy weekend coincides with I-5 lane closures

By Susan Gilmore

Seattle Times staff reporter

It's bad enough that the Mariners are in town this
weekend, but add to the mix a Sonics playoff game at
KeyArena tomorrow night and the U2 rock concert Sunday
night also at the arena.

And then throw in two lane closures on Interstate 5.

Tonight, the Washington Department of Transportation
begins a month of weekend closures on southbound I-5
to repave the aging freeway. It's the first major
rehabilitation project for I-5 through downtown
Seattle since the freeway's completion in the
mid-1960s.

At noon today crews closed the southbound freeway exit
to Union Street.

At 10 p.m., crews will close two lanes of southbound
I-5 and the Howell Street onramp to southbound I-5.
The ramps and lanes will remain closed until 5 a.m.
Monday.

The express lanes will run southbound all weekend,
24-hours a day, beginning at 10 p.m. tonight. Three
lanes of southbound I-5 will remain open all weekend.

The state is repaving the freeway from the southbound
Howell Street onramp near Olive Way to James Street,
tearing up the old asphalt and replacing it with
concrete. It is a $5 million project.

The state's contractor, Gary Merlino Construction,
will replace the old asphalt with three inches of new
asphalt and 13-inches of concrete, said Paul Johnson,
assistant project engineer who, as a college student,
worked on the original construction of I-5 in 1966.

DOT officials say the worse-case scenario, if drivers
don't take alternative routes, northbound I-5 could be
backed up for five miles beyond Boeing Field tomorrow
afternoon because of the express-lane shift, and I-5
southbound could be stalled to Northeast 145th Street.

"The Sonics game took it over the top," said Stan
Suchan, DOT spokesman. "But you can't rant against the
Sonics."

On Saturdays, 102,000 cars normally are on the stretch
of I-5 from James Street to Olive Way, where two lanes
of the freeway will be closed this weekend. It peaks
at noon with 6,800 cars.

Sundays, the number is 94,000, with the peak of 6,600
again at noon.

This weekend is the first of four major construction
weekends for this project, which is scheduled to end
May 23. But rainy weather could delay the project into
June.

The state is hoping drivers will take alternative
routes, such as Interstate 405 and Highway 99
