[GSAS-Member] first real spawn
I am kind of new to this list (but have posted a few times), and also
somewhat new (about 1 year) to successful and knowledgable fish keeping.
The past 2 weeks have been very stressful on me and I am sure my fish,
because I moved from my condo in Belltown, to a house (with a nice concrete
floor w/ drain basement, AKA fishroom) with my partner. I was very careful
moving the tanks, and took great care in the process. As a result I lost no
fish and everyone seemed happy. About half way through draining my Lake
Malawi Cichlid tank I discovered a few fry. I am sure I'd already sucked up
some (another "dumb" thing to add to my list), however I was able to save 4,
and they are doing well. They are yellow labs. I got everyone settled in a
little over a week ago. I have a smaller (around 18g, long) tank with a
pair of jewel cichlids (hemichromis bimaculatus) that I purchased a while
back from Anita (also a GSAS member). The last week I noticed they were
hiding quite a bit, and I thought it was because we just moved, and they
were nervous. Well, today I went to feed them, and noticed around 100+ fry
swimming around them. I was so excited I think I called everyone I knew.
Why is it people aren't excited when you tell them your fish had babies?!
Anyway, they seem healthy, the parents are great, and everyone seems happy.
What does everyone do with their fry? I have friends that trade them, sell
them to stores (which ones?), etc... What about any that might be deformed?
Can I feed them to other fish? I have various community fish, lake malawi
cichlids, angels, kribensis, and discus (not all together of course)... I
will save some for the auction. Sorry for all the questions...
Monica
