Hi Monica. Sorry about the delay. Your email escaped my notice until now.I started with 5 altums. One was a weak fish and died soon after I got him. Two didn't survive the stress of transport/examination/treatment for a suspected parasite which turned out to be benign. The last two are doing just fine and seem to be very hardy. They like very acidic water (Ph < 6)
Where is Above & Beyond Aquariums? I'd like to check it out, as I live in West Seattle.

Wow! Really? I was speaking with the owner of King's Discus about them (I love his). He said only about 10% survive when you first purchase them, even with an established and perfect aquarium. Did you find this to be the case? He said he doesn't sell them for that reason. I spoke with the guy who works at Above and Beyond aquariums in West Seattle (this store has AMAZING deals and if you pay in cash they give you all kinds of extras) and he said he can get some in in September if I want. Do you have any advice about them? btw... my friend Lori just got another free pleco so will not need mr P, but thanks. :)MonicaFrom: Bob and Judy Holmes <jbholmes@nwlink.com>Reply-To: Greater Seattle Aquarium Society member chat<gsas-member@thekrib.com>To: Greater Seattle Aquarium Society member chat <gsas-member@thekrib.com> Subject: RE: [GSAS-Member] "Mr. P" needs a new home Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2005 14:59:54 -0700Hi Monica. I got my altums from Liems a few years ago. He gets them in from time to time.Bob At 10:44 PM 7/27/2005 +0000, you wrote:I forwarded this to my friend (Lori) who might be interested. She has several good sized tanks. I had to laugh at your email though. I have a 14" pleco (Jeb), who sounds just like Mr. P. Where did you get your altums? I have been researching them for quite some time, and am hoping to get some this year. I have been talking with an exporter/importer in Thailand but am not so sure I want to have them shipped from that far, even though they can overnight it.MonicaFrom: Bob and Judy Holmes <jbholmes@nwlink.com>Reply-To: Greater Seattle Aquarium Society member chat<gsas-member@thekrib.com>To: gsas-member@thekrib.com Subject: [GSAS-Member] "Mr. P" needs a new home Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 16:12:45 -0700"Mr. P" is a standard issue plecostomus who has grown way too big for his tank (45 gal.) to the point where he, or she, trashes the aquascaping and poops out foot-long turds which lay all over the bottom and festoon the few plants that have managed to stay rooted. This is a living room tank. Not good."Mr. P" is in very good health, keeps the tank algae-free (eats mostly algae wafers) and seems to have a pleasant personality. Length is just under 12", nose to tip of tail, with a beam of about 2". Tankmates are two large altum angels and some giant danios. Water is very acidic (pH < 6.0) but I'm sure Mr. P would adapt to other water conditions.Mr. P would be happy in a much bigger tank. Free to good home. Anyone interested?
