Re: [GSAS-Member] Some fish available

More likely 'sick' from fluorescent bulbs (and I had a fishroom full of them at one time) is sick of buzzing, whining, smelly ozone-produce cheap ballasts in cheap fixtures. Eventually I upgraded all the shoplites I had to electronic-ballast based ones that were higher quality, and the room got 'nicer.'

Incandescent fixtures have big drawbacks, too, like excessive heat produced and limited color range which matters to some plants.

No, I was not referring to EMF, but instead the gamma emissions. This information is confirmed by my RSO (Radiation Safety Officer) here at work, so I feel pretty confident about it. I have a meter here at work and will take it home to measure my 2 four foot compact flourescents that I have on my 150G tank. If need be, I'll bring them into work and have my RSO evaluate them as well.

Scott,
just saw your email. We're not talking about the same energy frequencies. The gauss meters I described in my email to Dave do not measure visible light. In addition to the EMF that the gauss meters measure, I remember learning that fluorescent light do produce other harmful radiation as well, similar to the ionizing radiation that CRT screens produce. I bet I could track down more info on that. I'll see what my electrician comes up with as well.

Ok, this is just silly. Standard flourescent lights do not put out any more radiation than visible light. Very, very, little. Sunlight puts out more. A UVA/UVB light has a slightly higher activity level than sunlight but still WAY less than say, an x-ray. Is the "radiation" comming off of a UVA/UVB bulb measurable? Yes, but so is sunlight. The reality is that there is no significant difference between the amount of radiation comming from a flourescent UVA/UVB light and sunlight. You might lose something on the order of 0.5 fish per million for the extra radiation they are being exposed to. Is this really different than their living in their natural habitat exposed to sunlight and injesting tritium (H3)? (tritium is a naturally occuring element) No. Seriously folks, I'd be much more worried about making sure my hands were chemical free before cleaning my tank than the radiation comming from flourescent bulbs.

John, I'm curious about the radiation that you measured. What portion of the
E-M spectrum was it and what was the data ?
dave
I'm sick of fluorescent
bulbs. I measured the radiation they put out, and it is quite high.
