Re: [GSAS-Member] Oops, correction

The idea with the substrate heating is that the roots of the plants are stimulated to grow. Most people will measure a temperature difference in the gravel bed of their tank if it is reasonably thick (say 1 inch or more), where the temperature of the gravel is up to 10 DF lower.

While this would probably help plants toward their optimal growth rate, I feel that it is generally an expensive thing to do. One can get excellent growth rate in plants by providing everything else; proper nutrient balance, proper lighting, proper fish-load, etc. Doing this (without the heating/substrate cables), your plants will be growing so fast that you will need to prune them weekly. And let me tell you that it starts becoming a chore!

If it were me, I would invest a smaller amount of money in some good test kits, and some good dry nutrients. YMMV

Cheers,

Mark

With an undergravel heater, the roots would be warmer than with other types of heaters.

My plants seem to do better at a slightly lower temperature than my fish do.
Does anyone else see the reverse?

Doh! I knew I'd catch something wrong. In question #3, I said " How
much can I expect to spend for a 75 gallon? " What I meant was, how
much can I expect to pay for a substrate heater setup for a 75 gallon
tank. Googling doesn't seem to tell me if it's just the cable or if
I'll need extra bits.

And finally, the books I own are "Setting up a Tropical Aquarium Week
by Week" by Stuart Thraves. It's great, but very much a beginner's
book so it doesn't cover a lot of fish.. The other book I own is a
secondhand "Aquarium Encyclopedia" by HPBooks. It's large, but old,
and technology has outpaced it.
