Hi Drew!Your first question was what "annual" meant... you are basically correct. Annual killifish tend to live around a year. My experience is 6 months to 2 years depending on the species. The N. guentheri I have available tend to live about 14 months. The fish are currently about 2 months old, and already breeding size.
Also, most annual killifish are bred over some kind of substrate material in which the eggs are later collected. I breed mine over peat moss. After collecting the peat moss with eggs, I incubate it for 3-4 months, and then hatch out baby fish.
As for a tank to keep them in... Most people that breed killifish tend to do so in species only tanks. This isn't to say that you can't do it some other way, as some people do keep and breed killies in community tanks that have one or two other species of fish... it is just that most fish tend to eat eggs if they can find them... not to mention that snails like to eat the eggs too. If you are trying to be successful with killies, I'd stick to the species only tank methodology.
So, my suggestion is to find some pretty tetras or such for your existing tanks. If you want to try killies, then a 2.5 or 5 gallon tank would be great for annuals, or 2.5 - 20 gallon tanks for plant spawners (non-annuals).
