Alfred: The short answer: A soil amendment offered by Lesco http://www.lesco.com/?PageID=27&ItemNumber=083365 The long answer: The grail for planted tank keepers is well, anything cheap. Now substrate is a double problem as it is heavy (expensive to ship) and a good quantity is needed (up to 4"). So over the years as documented at thekrib.com people have tried almost anything. While there are successes, sand can compact, kitty litter goes soggy, and soil gets dirty. For this reason many are "advanced" as great harm can occur. For the most part "non-advanced" cheap things are lapis-luster (coarse sand?), sand blasting grit, and pond products (several are like fluorite, only lighter!). So the newest entry is soilmaster to which is currently very popular at theplantedtank.net and the APD mailing list. Basically, it is a fractured clay product (like fluorite) available in red and "charcoal". If you live near a Lesco distributor, they will ship for free for local pickup. Now we are talking ~$15 for 50 pounds! However there is not a Lesco within 600 miles and my needs are < a flat (1 ton) so I stopped looking. http://www.geocities.com/jhoetzl/tank/substrates/substratechallenge.htm The newest Firefox broke the spell checker :( On Wed, 15 Feb 2006, carrera206 wrote:
Auction was great fun. Great job everyone! Does anyone know of a good source for Soilmaster Select grey? Also any thoughts on effectiveness and messiness?
