Ben and I have an 80g tank that is ready to be set up. We bought silica
sand for it because originally it was going to be a Malawi tank. But now
we're thinking of really giving the planted tank thing a try. We'd like to
be as successful as possible without going broke buying supplies our planted
aquarium. From what I have read a substrate beneficial to plants truly does
make a big difference which isn't hard to believe since I know that much
about my houseplants. The Soilmaster Select sounds promising if there's a
way to order some. I prefer a darker color substrate if possible anyway.
But I'm open to harvesting some soil from here in Washington as well. I
think when we saw Susan the other night she indicated that she got the
substrate in her 100g somewhere in the state, but I don't remember where.
So before I add this sand, and potentially get to the point of tearing the
tank down to remove it later on, I thought I'd ask what you guys would do.
Thanks very much.
Holly
