I checked with a friend in NJ who is breeding these fish (before everyone starts, don't expect me to be able to get any, certainly not before summer and maybe not then, said friend is extremely tight with his fish). They're selling, occasionally, in the NY/NJ area for around $15 each at the pet shops that have them. He's bred a generation, they breed true to color and form, and are, according to him, harder to breed than normal rasbora. Smaller egg yields (at most 10 in a day, usually only 3 or 4) and the eggs take 4 days to hatch, which is unusual for rasbora as well. He's bred many species of tetras, rasbora, killies and cichlids and believes this fish to be a new species, not a hybrid. We'll know 'better' once he raises a subsequent generation, even though that's not sufficient these days to define what is a species or not, in fact, I don't think there's an accepted definition anymore. He says it's a smallish fish, bigger than Hyphessobrycon amandae, about an inch long. If you really want a relatively easy small colorful fish, I'd recommend the amandae instead. They are imported when cardinal tetras come in, and I've seen them at places like Denny's and Blue Sierra, and with plants and occasional live food you'll get small ones to grow up with the parents, provided nothing else eats them. Quite colorful, they remind me of pomegranate seeds swimming around. Sometimes they're sold as 'ember tetras.'My old club, if you were the first to spawn a fish, you'd get 25 BAP points. If you want to get interest going in a BAP, raise the points on fish you want to see around. I'm sort of amazed that things that are really easy to breed like Ilyodon furcidens and the various skiffias don't get more attention - NJ has my population of Skiffia multipunctata going because its worth so much in the BAP :-) All of these are easily bred fish, in fact, most of them don't mind real cold weather and would have been fine in my place, which still lacks power, maybe it'll be back on Monday.
