As I remember when I was at Kevin's in Burien, he had pairs of Epiplatys
annulatus for $14.99.. My memory could be faulty here. They're a great fish and
thrive in quiet, planted tanks. Put them in with bigger tankmates and you won't
see them nor will any of their offspring survive. Put them in a smaller tank
with thick plant cover (water sprite works best), no snails and feedings of
small live food like artemia nauplii, and you'll get more. They're not the
hardest fish to propagate -> when I've bred them in the past, when I saw
offspring showing up in the parents tank, I'd move the parents to a similar
tank and just feed bbs to the offspring's tank, and net them out. Picking eggs
doesn't work too well - their eggs aren't very adhesive and I don't think they
like being moved. I've never done it successfully.
I don't think they'd do well in a community setting at all. Too shy and not
fond of fast moving water.
They've been in the killi hobby for like, forever, and there are a lot of color
forms. Most folks look for strong red color and blue in the tail. Your best bet
is to start with the best looking adults you can find and line breed them
culling the ones that aren't strongly colored. There are a lot of people
claiming to be breeding Epiplatys annulatus 'monroviae', which is where the
original importation was from, but consensus is that that fish is long gone
from the organized hobby.
