[GSAS-Member] spontaneous snail generation

So, in my 55 gallon semi-planted tank (used to be planted prior to introduction 
of rainbow cichlids, which have since been removed,) I am now plagued with the 
weirdest looking sort-of flat ramshorns along the sides of the tank.
 
No new plants in months. No snails before the rainbow cichlids were there.
 
All that's changed, is I introduced a new Eheim canister filter with the tank. 
Same old food as ever (dried food, frozen brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms)
 
Any ideas? Am tempted to had-a-snail the whole thing, there are only 5 easily 
removed killies in there.
