In my experience, they're not that useful for algae but are great for cleaning 
up uneaten food. I think the general consensus is that Amano shrimp are the 
best at cleaning up some algae, particularly BBA. As far as ph, I've never kept 
them in anything higher than 6.2 so, I don't know how they'd do in harder
