Re: [GSAS-Member] celestial pearl danios?
Hi Matt,
Although I can't say for sure if they are jumpers or not since I never really
kept them in open top tank.(although I have some juvi in 4' 45G but the tank
have the thicket of Water Sprite, duckweeds and what not covering the 1/3~1/2
of surface. Also tank is only usually filled to few inches short of the top.
But I don't think I ever find the dried up body outside)
But nobody answer your question so I will try to describe what I see.
And I was just talking about their behavior with Dan who bought the pair at
the April auction.
Anyway, they seem they really prefer to lurk in the thicket of the plants or
decoration. And they do definitely seek for the cover whenever they detect
some movement or shadow cast upon their tank. Maybe that is one of the reason
why they didn't discovered until recently.
And this is more so when they are kept in the small numbers. Also their
preferred egg deposit site is thicket near the ground unlike some of the tetra
that come up to the surface and scatter the eggs.
Although I start with 2 pairs and soon after one of the male found dead(and I
suspect the foul play) and end up with the trio. And they produced 100 of kids
and I think they will continue to do so if I give them proper condition.
Although I have no idea about their lifespan.
Although they are fast swimming fish but they are kind of timid little
colorful fish. And it seems they do enjoy their own company and even hang
around in the group.
Although I never kept any in such a small tank but I do have handful in 4~5G
tank with some cherry shrimps. And they seem fine. So I don't know how many
can house in the 1G. Then again they are small fish. And I know they can
accept wide range of water parameter and I consider them hardy. They probably
as hardy as regular Zebra Danios although I never kept those.
But I have some in the unheated tank to the tank of 80F.
Anyway, here is my opinion without any scientific validation.
They would prefer to be kept in the group(probably 6+ like any other
schooling fish) if the space permit. And you would see them more. Although it
is possible that the fish get used to the movement or person around their tank
if they are in the tank sitting next to the person all the time like desktop.
But I would not know since I don't have the desktop tank that I sit next for
many hours.
Although I can't say for sure but I would worry to have wrong ratio(too many
males) in small area since I think they may get territorial when they are in
the breeding age. Although the male is more colorful.
Sorry I don't have conclusive answer but I don't think they are anymore
jumpers than any other regular fish. They are certainly not like hatchetfish
or nothing. But there is always the risk with the open top if you ask me. The
fish could jump if they get startle or scared by some sudden loud noise or the
shake. But I think they would tend to dive than jump. And I'm sure your risk
would further reduced by having some floating plants.
If you like I can fetch the link for the CPD forum. They might give you
better answer than I do.

could house a few of them but I don't want to do that if they'll go carpet
