There are certainly lots of folks on this list who know way more about this than I but in my experience a mineral rich substrate supports stronger and more rapid root growth supporting the general health and betterment of the plant. I suggest a layer of something that would work well for the plants you are most into and then put the beautiful blue stuff back on top.
