Laurel- Which water clarifier did you use? Some will say to start with one drop per gallon, then after a few hours it has done it's job, so it's time for the next dose. If you are dealing with an algae bloom you won't get ahead of the reproduction rate until you've done a few doses. Don't clean the sump.
