One of my 'females' may be a male. This fish is very very red but stripeless. More of a blotchy red. This makes me wonder if it's important to pay attention to color patterns in the pairs we breed. Seems like the F1 generation may lose some of the key color characteristics of the species quickly when we choose the breeding pair rather than allow a more natural selectivity to occur. But I'm just guessing....and I've got that purebred dog breed fancier stuff behind me as well (grin). All of my Dario dario are in individual tanks (2.5 - 5 gal).
