[GSAS-Member] On building ponds

Don and Betty, and anyone else:

Sorry I didn't respond to this question sooner, but I wanted to give it some
thought.
These are some sites that I think would be of interest to people starting a pond
project.

http://watergarden.com/pages/build_wg.html
http://www.loriswebs.com/jerryskoi/
http://www.olympickoiclub.org/
http://www.olympickoiclub.org/ponddesign.html
http://www.tim-jansen.com/koi_step-by-step_plumb.htm

But there are a lot of questions that one should answer before deciding how to
go about
it. The pond I just made followed a simply 3-step process.
1- Find a spot for a pond.
2- Start digging a hole.
3- Ask yourself what kind of liner material you have around (I had some
10-foot-wide 6
mil stuff on a roll).
4- When the hole is big enough to use all that plastic stop digging and lay the
plastic
down.
5- Start filling.

But this isn't the right process for everyone.

So the first things you need to ask yourself are;
A-- What would I do with a pond if I had one?
     Raise some big koi?
Make a natural planted pond setting?
Keep various fish, and some plants, and whatever else comes into your head
from
time to time?

B-- How much time and money do you want to spend on this?
    As little as possible?
    A reasonable amount?
Thinking you'd like something really nice if maybe a bit costly?

C-- What kind of restrictions do you have?
Need security against predators? Or kids, pets, neighbors, etc?
    Not much room?
    Not much money?
    Can't do any heavy labor?
    Can't do anything too permanent?
Has to win approval of spouse/neighbor/landlord/higher power?

If you guys can answer these questions, and share the ideas you've come up with,
perhaps we could discuss it on this list and get input from other members as
well.
Otherwise, if it gets too involved, we can take some of it off list and share
your
experience in the newsletter as the project evolves.

   I have a design that I worked on years ago for a solar-heated above-ground
pond,
that I never really constructed. Betty might be interested in that. And I still
have
the "big" pond which has a more elaborate system than this recent one. I could
share
some details of that as well.
