You would have to be nuts to use Pyrethrum. Anything that can kill spider mites (and I think pyrethrum is the only thing that can w/ certainty) is pretty strong. For the pads wipe then off with water and the koi will eat the bugs. I have also used a very mild soap solution too in the past, with some pepper sprinkled in. Never had probs after that.
