Re: [GSAS-Member] Website with Native fish.... Field trip!

Cliff,

I wasn't aware that the UW had a collection. Do you mean alive in aquaria?

It's usually easy to catch at least a few small (~2-4") sunfish, rock bass
(and other introduced "warmwater sport fish" like largemouth bass) and
suckers on a tiny hook if you have a license-- but I wouldn't put any of
these in something less than 50gal or so (at least, not in the long term).

It seems like most of the interesting smaller fish that will do ok in
warmer (non-chilled/room temperature) water are from much farther south. I
used to catch super-cool tiny suckerfish in the American river as a kid,
but I don't think they'd survive an aquarium without a chiller.

As far as a field-trip goes, that sounds like fun...we've missed the free
fishing weekend this year, but you can always fish for regular carp and
bullfrogs without a license since it's alot better for our ecosystem if
they're dead. When I was a member of PNHS (years ago) we once had a "Frog
Gigging Day". A little morbid I guess, but helpfull for the native
species.

Isn't there a native fish collection at UW? Maybe we could set up a group
tour sometime and check out a few of our native species up close?

Cliff
