That's a good question. I know there are definitely types that breed successfully in fresh water, so if the egg actually hatches I suppose that would leave less of a mess behind. The sulawesi's make "egg sacks", so only one larger blob to deal with every once in a while, but I'm not sure how eagerly they eat algea. I'll update once I get them and they've had a chance to fix up or mess up my tanks...
