I once heard Jack Wattley speak on Discus, and among other things he said, he recommended Rummy Nose tetras as a less costly fish that, if they did well in your tanks, would indicate that Discus could do well there, too. So, given that, I'd make sure the water was warm (80-85) and acid, and clean. Fish laying on their side is never a good sign.
