I usually stop by this show every year since it's so close to where I live. This is the first time I've actually been as 'invested' in koi themselves since I have some koi dependants now. However, I never did find a club member who had reared koi from fry. I was trying to get an idea about the usual tendencies in pattern development...what to expect with these little guys. Seems that most get their koi from others at around 2" or larger. Connie & I chatted with the Australian judge for quite awhile after observing the Sunday walk-through discussion of the show winners by the judges and that was fascinating! And gosh darn it....I ended up buying 2 of the koi from the sale ponds. I figured since it looks like I'm going to end up trying out koi, I might as well get a couple that have my favorite patterns (showa, metallic hikari-mjoyo(?)...white-orange-black). Learning all those color pattern names is going to be a CHALLENGE. Don't know if it will EVER happen (weak grin). Getting away from koi but sticking with pond fish topic: I'd LOVE to learn about how to pick a 'good' shubunkin! There's no way on earth I can rear hundreds of goldfish or koi fry for a year and then pick and choose. But it would be good to know what goals to use other than common sense and personal color preference! I like a 'balanced' color distribution with as much black as orange as white...or as close to that as possible. But is that a 'good' shubunkin and would others want fish like that (scratching head)?
