If you're medicating with anything, it also absorbs medications, so  
it's a PITA if you have a sick fish.  If your biological filtration is  
up to snuff and you keep the tank clean, there's no need to use carbon  
unless you are trying to remove a medication from the water column or  
you like wasting your money.
