How cold is your average ambient temp? I think there's a lot of fish that are 
hardy enough to handle "American average household" room temperature. 
 
I've had danios (zebra and giant), adult female bettas, and white cloud minnows 
in unheated tanks in my apartment. 
 
White cloud minnows, specifically, can handle temps down to 55 deg f, according 
to various web sources.

I know there are probably too many answers to this question but I am going
to give it a try...

Almost all of my experience is with fish at the 78-82 temp range.  Would
anyone like to suggest their favorite fish who can handle an unheated tank?
I?d like to get some short term pals to live with my Koi until the summer
when they will need the whole tank.
