Re: [GSAS-Member] What do you feed your young Koi?

DeYoungs is in Woodinville. That's where I get my poultry food also (smile).

All the koi food I've got is way too huge for these little guys and I'm
too lazy to smash it to bits for them....so they've been getting high
protein what-ever-is-around. I've been trying to vary the baby koi diet
but they get the Ocean Nutrition flake every day in the morning, frozen
brine shrimp when I get home, and something else around 5-6pm (whatever I
grab). I've got some sinking spirulina tabs to try on them as well....but
haven't done it yet. I do a water change daily, but that's mostly because
they aren't in huge tanks and I'm using sponge filtration.

I noticed that when I first brought my outside batch inside, they weren't
interested in eating unless it was live food (daphnia). But as they got
warmed up (ambient house temp is in the mid to high 60's), they were more
interested in food. It took about 2 days. They all pick food off the
bottom now, if it makes it that far!

By the way, I've been using koi wheat germ pellets for my outside koi
(from the Koi Show in September) and only feed them when they are
scrounging around at the surface anyway looking for food. I'd read that
there is some magic temperature to stop feeding them at but it seems that
each reference uses a different temp (shrug). So I base feeding on their
behavior/interest. Interestingly enough, my shubunkins aren't at all
interested in eating right now, but the koi are aggressively looking for
food at times.
